Artist a day deally

Hi!  My name is Tomas.  Some people call me Tommy, Tom, Thomas, etc, I'm pretty flexible on that.  So this blog is for my digital photography class and for my first post I'm supposed to pick an artist from artistaday.com. There are so many great artist to choose from, I had a hard time narrowing it down to just one.  I remembered checking out this site around my birthday, like six months ago so I decided to dig into the archives way back to March.  I figured since I'm taking digital photography, I should look at some photographers.  So I clicked on a few here and there and then I came across Ian Cumberland.  Since I was digging his stuff I went ahead and visited his site: www.iancumberland.com. Cumberland is an oil painter from Ireland.  At first I thought I was looking at photos that had been modified to resemble oil paintings, not the other way around.

But the form of media isn't what got me to pick Mr. Cumberland for my first post.  His style is what attracted me.  His portraits have a gritty, truthful, surrealistic quality.  Even if they aren't all as blatantly surreal as this one.  But truly my favorite aspect of his work is his incorporation of humor, which is often dark and/or satirical, in a good number of his pieces.  I think this is some pretty great work so I couldn't resist sharing, Ian Cumberland with you all.
